How to beat Captain Wise-Voice in Black Myth: Wukong – Destructoid
Captain Wise-Voice stands guard at the top of a prison in the Pagoda Realm in Black Myth: Wukong. He’s a mandatory boss, so come hell or high water, you’re going to have to beat him.
Up to this point in the game, Yellow Wind Sage has arguably been the hardest boss in the game, but I think Captain Wise-Voice really gives the Sage a run for his money. The Captain is a tall, four-legged being that can deal a ton of damage in just a few hits and also has an extremely large health pool. To me, this battle felt like a war of attrition, but the best way to come out on top is to know your enemy before going in.
How to beat Captain Wise-Voice
Before you even start fighting Captain Wise-Voice, make sure that you have at least one point in the Pillar Stance tree. Once or twice during the fight, the gold orb in the Captain’s head floats in the middle of the room and shoots out lightning bolts. The Captain can’t take damage during this time, and if you don’t charge a Pillar Stance heavy attack when the arena flashes red, you’ll take a near-lethal amount of electricity damage.
The first thing to notice when you actually start the battle is the Captain’s injured foot. It’s on his front right side, and it’s the only place on the Captain’s body that takes any damage. A few times throughout the fight you might stagger the Captain causing him to kneel down and give you a good shot at the gold orb that seems to be his head. For the most part, though, you’re going to want to stick to that foot like glue.
Captain Wise-Voice will usually start the fight by shooting a blast of electricity at you. It’s possible to dodge the blast at the very last second, but I had an easier time running underneath his body before the blast went off. Once you’re actually attacking the Captain’s foot, he’ll usually start throwing out some stomps that are pretty clearly telegraphed and easy to dodge.
Many of the Captain’s attacks deal electricity damage, so it’s a good idea to head into this fight with a few Shock-Quelling Powders in your inventory. Sometimes the Captain’s stomps will send out a wave of energy you need to jump over, and occasionally he’ll spawn bolts of lightning all over the ground that you need to avoid.
There’s one more strong attack to look out for. The Captain will sometimes charge a stomp, and his feet will glow yellow before they slam into the ground. Jump right before the slam, or the Captain will toss you into the air and deal a ton of damage to you with a grab attack.
Those are the moves you need to be prepared to deal with. Because he’s so big, the Captain can be hard to see, but with target lock off you can swivel the camera and watch his moves more easily. Take this fight slow and steady. Once he’s down, you have quite the journey through chapter three ahead of you.
